I’ve received lots of amazing cards over the years, and I love to display them year after year. I know that lots of time and love have been put into each of these handmade cards, and I cherish every one of them. I accept that most folks don’t keep holiday cards, but that got me thinking about how to send holiday greetings with a little more longevity. So this year, I’ve been working on paper ornaments that can be removed from the card and hung on the tree!
I enjoy making a variety of styles of cards depending on the recipient, and I’ve the same with these ornaments. Each ornament has a basic snowflake design using the Star Snowflake dies from Waffle Flower. This die set includes a large stylized snowflake and a coordinating shadow die that are perfect for ornament-making.
The first style I went with was “glitz and shine”! With this trio of cards, I used lots of glitter cardstock to create an inlaid style snowflake in 3 colors. For even more shine, I layered those snowflakes onto metallic foil! For all the ornaments, I added a blank paper backing (in the same shadow die cut shape) so that I could write a little message and add the year. It’s hard to tell from this pic alone, but these ornaments are super shiny!
The second style I went with was “rustic and textured”! This time, I cut the snowflake with some woodgrain paper and layered them over patterned papers (gingham, plaid, and vintage newspaper designs). I wanted something a little extra so I used the Layered Winter Bird Die and the Pine Branch Panel Die to die cut some cardinals and some pine branches. The birds and the branches are all cut from woodgrain-textured cardstock with various inks blended over them. I love how the blended ink really brings out all the texture! I added a little bit of coarse glitter “snow” to the birds and the branches, and then added a good amount of white splatters to the whole ornament. I used twine for the hanger with a few wood beads for one last rustic touch.
The final style I went with was CAS, except for this time I mean “cute and simple”. This set of ornaments came together quickly with just glitter cardstock, felt, and beads and pompoms. I cut all the snowflakes in glitter cardstock and cut the backgrounds in different color felt. I layered the glitter snowflakes over the felt die cut and sewed on the beads and pompoms over the snowflakes so I didn’t have to use any messy glue. I love the little bit of rainbow with the snowflake theme!
These were so fun to make, I think I’m going to make some for my tree! If you want to get a closer look at the ornaments, hop over to IG to see my reel! Thanks for stopping by and Merry Christmas!
