Here’s a fun little side project that I’ve been working on. Around Christmas I made some book-themed holiday cards (here and here) and I wanted to expand on the idea. I had a vague idea of what I wanted, but it all came together when I recently picked up the MFT Crafty Hands dies. But instead of crafting hands, I made reading hands! Here’s how this card came together.
First I die cut the hands and colored them with copics. It’s been awhile since I used my copics and I’d forgotten how fun it is! Then I started working on the books. I did a quick search on the internet for the book covers I wanted (this card is for a friend’s daughter) and printed them. The pics were resized to about 1-1/4″ high to get the right scale.
To give the books a little dimension, I glued the covers onto a thick foam sheet and colored the edges with copics to mimic the spine and pages. Here’s a look at the books from the side.
To finish off the card, I added a sentiment from the Waffle Flower Story Sentiments set and a die cut frame. The frame is from the Waffle Flower Fancy Frames die set, and it reminds me of the classic detailing on a hardcover book (especially with a little bit of gold behind it).
This card was so much fun to make and I can’t wait to try different versions customized for different folks. This card also sparked another “real scene” card (not books, but something else). So if you like this style, stay tuned!
Aloha and mahalo, jj
