Now that the holidays are over, I have a little extra time to play around with all the goodies from the Tim Holtz Sizzix Everyday 2023 release! This time I picked up the Blossom and Papercuts Cafe with some ideas of color blocking CAS cards in mind. Color blocking is a great way to use very detailed, layering dies for a more CAS and modern look.
The first step was choosing colors. Instead of going the natural color palette, I went more in a pop art pastel direction using colors from the Scrapbook.com Warms and Cools paper pads. I used the same color palette for both of my cards today.
The first card I made uses the Blossom die set that features a huge flower and coordinating leaf branch. You can certainly use the blossom as is, but I employed a technique that I love for CAS cards. Just like you would crop a photo, I cropped the die cut which gives it a more close-up view feel.
I chose the mini slimline size (3.5″ X 6″) which works so well for the cropped look. As the another detail, I further cropped the look by putting the die cut on a smaller panel (3″ X 5.5″) and popped it up with some foam tape. The final details are some iridescent gems and a sentiment from the Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz Crazy Talk set.
This next card uses the same color palette and cardstock, but this time I used the Papercuts Cafe die set. This set has a variety of mugs that totally lend themselves to color blocking. I litterally cut 4 color blocks in 4 different colors. Then I used the same colors to put together 4 mugs. Each square has the same 4 colors in a different layer.
The color blocks were arranged in a square and floated with some foam tape on an A2 sized card. Color blocking like this was made popular by Andy Warhol in the 60’s, but this kind of design is always a classic. I finished off the cards with a label (and color blocked) sentiment is from the Sizzix Good Vibes set.
